Paranormal Activity 2

P.A 2 is Rated R, which is relevant for the suspenseful scenes and mild profanity. The film is “based” off of a true story. Which adds much more suspense for the audience to feed off of.

The overall plot is about a California family that is startled from a break-in, and decide to set five security cameras throughout the house. They later find out what is causing the ruckus, and their choice to deal with it in their own hands.

So far the film has grossed approximately 40 million during it’s first weekend. Which topped the first in it’s first opening weekend.

This was a timely film due to the first Paranormal Activity film that came out last fall. At the conclusion of the first Paranormal, it was expected that a sequel was going to come out as well. The film was directed by Tod Williams, with screenplay done by Tom Pabst, Christopher B. Landon and Michael R. Perry. The approximate running time is 91 minutes. The pacing of the film is a moderate build-up. Each scene gives the audience a little more attraction so by the end of the film they are at the edge of their seats in fear.

The director does a good job with this by setting the camera’s at random places throughout the house.

One camera is set in the top corner of the kitchen, the second camera is set directly outside the house above the front door, the third camera is in the backyard overlooking the family pool, the fourth camera oversees the whole living room, and the fifth camera is placed in front of the front door on the ceiling. A handheld camera is also used that ads a more ‘real’ and personal feel that the audience can relate to.

Transition styles are simple. Each transition is either a jump-cut to the next scene, or a fade-out.
The dialogue is casual. Although there is somewhat of a script involved, it is unclear if it is actually followed. The director wanted this to seem real as possible, and to do so there needs to be some sort of an unobstructed environment. Where dialogue can begin and end at any minute and in the middle of a sentence someone can laugh, or abrupt with side-talk.

There’s a scene in the movie where the daughter is holding the video camera that is directed only on Micah and her father. The two are in conversation with Katie, and Cassie yet there are not shown on the screen. This makes the viewer feel that a script is not involved to the casual like dialogue.

Overall I must say that the film was well put together. It tied together greatly with the first one, and once again the ending leaves everyone either disappointed, or kept you guessing. In my beliefs, there will be a third one. In conclusion I would give Paranormal Activity 2 a B- for it’s mass build-up, tying well together to the first, and for the unpredictable continuity.
